LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ Ed Kaminski set a meet record in the javelin, and Kansas State broke its own record in the women's sprint-medley relay to highlight action in the 71st Kansas Relays.
Kaminski, competing for Nike, tossed the javelin 251 feet, 4 inches in the university-open competition Friday, breaking his own record of 250-6 set in 1992.
"I'm really happy," Kaminski said. "I'm from Kansas City, and I haven't thrown in the Relays for a while. It was a really tough wind, but I tried getting the meet record and I did."
Kansas State won the sprint medley in 3:52.31 to break the record of 3:58.05 set in 1995, the first year the race was in its new format of 200-, 200-, 400- and 800-meter legs.
Chris Tozier, competing unattached, and Harold Cronin of Missouri took first and second in the Bill Nieder open shot put, with Cronin recording a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA outdoor championship meet.
Tozier tossed the shot 59-11 3/4, with Cronin the runner-up at 59-7.
Heather Nelson of Iowa State recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a 52-5 1/4 toss in the women's university shot put.
"I graduate this year so it's nice to go out like this," Nelson said.
Anna Whitham and Kristen Schulz of Kansas State both achieved provisional qualifying marks in the javelin, as did Deontrey Taylor of Colorado State, Frank Waota of Arkansas State and Ashley Bronk of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the men's 100-meter prelims.
Barton County Community College had two winners Friday, with Evette Turner taking the women's college 1,500-meter run in 4:40.63 and Philip Maiyo winning the men's 1,500 in a tight battle with Jerry Maritim of Cloud County. Maiyo outran Maritim on the final straight to record a 3:55.20 to 3:56.48 for Maritim.
Barton County also had a winner on Thursday, with Cleophas Boor taking the 10,000-meter run in 31:19.69.
Emporia State also won two events Friday, with Laura Rand tossing the shot 46-9 1/2 and John Corwin taking the college javelin in 219-4. Jurmain Mitchell also won the 5,000 on Thursday for the Hornets, running 15:06.46 to win comfortably.
Wichita State won the men's sprint-medley relay in 3:19.50 in a tight battle with Kansas and Kansas State.
Missouri won the 4-mile relay, but the host Jayhawks were shut out.
In women's events, Kansas took second in the sprint-medley relay and Kim Feldkamp was second in the shot put. On the men's side, Jeff Dieterich took second in the javelin at 218-3, Chip Malmstrom and Mark Romito both cleared 16-0 in the pole vault behind Drake's Garrick Wilson, who won at 16-6.
For Kansas State, Vanitta Kinard was a close second in the long jump at 19-11 behind Jacqui Brown of Nike Central, who jumped 20-3 3/4.
Marshall Grayson took second in the open long jump at 25-0 3/4.
