LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Beverly McDonald became a four-time winner in the Kansas Relays on Saturday, breaking her own record at 200 meters.
McDonald, from Barton County Community College, ran the 200 in 23.48 seconds, .12 faster then her 1989 mark. She also won the 100 meters and ran on Barton County's winning 440-and 880-yard relay teams -- the 880 relay team also set a meet record.
It was a big day for athletes from Kansas colleges. The University of Kansas, Kansas State and Barton County all had multiple winners on a cold and windy day.
McDonald joined teammates Marlon Cannon, Bobby Gaseitsiwe and Daphnie Saunders as multiple winners.
Paulette Staats of Kansas State led from the start and was never pressed in winning the 3,000-meter run.
"The wind was really chilly," Staats said. "It tightened me up. There were a lot of good girls running. I guess they just didn't want to go with me."
Michael Cox broke out of a pack of five runners with 300 meters to go and anchored the Kansas distance medley relay team to a 10-meter victory in 9:50.7.
"We were a little worried about where we would place," Cox said. "I am very happy with the way I am running as a freshman. I didn't expect to run this well. It was a big deal to win."
Kansas State teammates Ernest Greene and Thomas Randolph finished first and second in the 100 meters, with Greene winning in 10.49.
Cannon won the men's 400 for Barton County over Tyrone Watkins of Kansas State. Barton County teammates Wes Russell and John Little were third and fourth.
"The weather was a big effect," Cannon said. "I can't get loose when it's this cold outside. I wasn't happy with my time. I know I can run faster."
Marybeth Labosky of Kansas won the women's high jump at 5-10. "It was very difficult to stay warm," she said. "In the high jump, you can easily get cold fast waiting for your turn to jump. However, I don't think the weather affected my performance overall."
Juliet Campbell won the women's 400 meters for Barton County, teammate Dionne Rose won the 100-meter hurdles and the 440-yard relay team won handily over Kansas State.
Penny Near won the women's discus in a meet record 199 feet, 11 inches competing for the Nike Coast Club.
