Ed Zamarripa, who was an early member of our group, died Monday [July 3].

Ed was a member of our KU faculty team in the Inter-university postal competitions in 1975-76 and 1976-77 and ran two 5Ks that we have a record of, the 1982 Fall Classic and the 1984 Run for Shelter.

He also took part in the Bunce run in 1992, '93, and '94. He had not otherwise been active with the group since that time, as far as I know.

Here is a note about Ed from John Colombo, director of the Lifespan Institute:

..............

Dear Colleagues:

I am very sorry to deliver some very sad news. We've learned that Ed Zamarripa, our friend and the longtime former associate director for finance for both the Bureau of Child Research and the Life Span Institute, died Monday
in Colorado Springs, CO.

Ed and his wife Mary Ann were en route to Las Vegas to visit his son a few weeks ago, when Ed fell ill on the road. They stopped at an ER in Colorado Springs, and Ed was admitted to the hospital, where doctors eventually found an abdominal clot and a severe infection. It's our understanding that he had multiple surgeries to correct the problem there and appeared to be on the mend before his condition took a turn for the worse over this past weekend.

Prior to his retirement in 2009, many of us worked closely with Ed during his 37-year tenure with the BCR and LSI. In many ways, he was a true collaborator with our investigators during the formative years of the Bureau, in managing
the institute's growing portfolio and resources over that time. It would be impossible to write the history of this organization without reference to his contributions and influence. He stayed in close touch with all of us, joining in our holiday gatherings and remaining on as Emeritus Staff and as a Friend of the LSI.

We have no information about a memorial, but we've been told that initial services will likely be held in Colorado, where much of Ed's family resided.
We will pass on details about events here in Lawrence as we become aware of them. [See obituary below.]

Ed’s running with the Mad Dogs only overlapped with mine for a year or two, but he was a very friendly guy who enjoyed a good conversation.  Here’s a little write-up about his retirement from KU after nearly 40 years of service.  Ed was the first recipient of the Jay Turnbull fellowship (some of you may have known Jay Turnbull, the son of Rud & Anne Turnbull).  RIP, Ed.
